Most health insurers have a notice period of three months prior to the end of the year. Notice of cancellation must therefore reach your health insurer by no later than the last working day in September.
However, exceptions do apply for multi-year contracts and premium increases. If the insurance premium changes, a one-month notice period usually applies. In this case, notice of cancellation must reach your health insurer by no later than the last working day in November. The precise details on terminations can be found in the respective insurance conditions.
A one-month notice period applies from notification of the premium for the following year. If you want to change your compulsory basic insurance as of 1 January, written notice of cancellation must reach your current health insurer by the last working day in November at the latest.
Standard basic insurance (not general practitioner or Telmed model) with the statutory deductible of CHF 300 (children without deductible) can also be changed as of 1 July. The notice period for termination is three months. Notice of cancellation must therefore reach your health insurer by no later than the last working day in March.
It will only be possible to change insurers if you have no outstanding premiums.
