FAQs

Answers to frequently asked questions about HOSPITAL PLUS CLASSICA semi-private supplementary hospital insurance:

Why do I need supplementary hospital insurance?

Supplementary hospital insurance allows you to enhance your basic hospital insurance cover for inpatient treatment with benefits of your choice.

Basic insurance covers only the cost of accommodation and medical treatment in a general ward (multi-bed room) in line with the rates in your canton of residence. You have to pay for anything in excess of that yourself, e.g. additional benefits for greater comfort, care or free choice of doctor/hospital – precisely the things that can make a stay in hospital considerably more pleasant.

Is there any point in having semi-private hospital insurance for a child?

Yes, because if your child needs to be hospitalised, you will undoubtedly want the best possible medical treatment and loving care in a comfortable environment. HOSPITAL CLASSICA, the family-friendly supplementary hospital insurance, is designed for precisely this purpose.

In any case, it is well worth concluding private or semi-private supplementary hospital insurance early on because you may be refused it at a later date depending on your state of health.

What is KidsCare?

KidsCare is a family-friendly service for children up to 15 years of age. If your child falls ill or has an accident and you have to go to work, we will quickly organise a specially trained carer to look after your child at home in their familiar surroundings

Details about KidsCare >

What does “Rooming-in” mean?

With Rooming-in you can also stay with your child overnight during your child's hospital stay. Rooming-in allows an accompanying person closely related to the child to stay with them in the hospital overnight and have meals there.

Can I have my child treated in any hospital in Switzerland?

Basically you are free to choose the hospital you want anywhere in Switzerland. However, some hospitals and clinics do not have a (recognised) semi-private ward. This means that such facilities may be subject to additional costs which you will have to pay yourself even if you have semi-private supplementary hospital insurance.

So please ask us before you are hospitalised whether we will cover all the costs.

Can I upgrade to a private ward if required?

Yes, on request you can change from the semi-private ward to a private ward for individual hospital stays. The additional costs incurred will then be charged to you. HOSPITAL PLUS CLASSICA does, however, reimburse 75% of these additional costs.

Who can take out this insurance?

The insurance can be taken out under the following conditions:

  • The person to be insured is living in Switzerland (official place of residence).
  • The person to be insured is younger than 65 at the start of insurance.
  • The person to be insured receives has their application accepted by us. For the purposes of risk assessment, we require you to fill in a health declaration.
How and when can I terminate the insurance?
  • The minimum term is one year.
  • The contract is automatically renewed each year on the expiry date for a further year.
  • You can terminate the policy on 31 December of each year, subject to three months' notice.
  • If the premium is adjusted, a shortened notice period of one month applies.

Details about termination >

Is there a waiting period?

The waiting period is the period between the date on which the insurance cover under your policy begins and the date from which you can claim benefits.

  • For maternity benefits, there is a waiting period of 365 days. That means you cannot claim these benefits before the end of the first insurance year. During the first insurance year, any pregnancy-related stays in hospital – for example for childbirth or postpartum – are covered only by your basic insurance. The latter covers the costs of a stay in a general ward (multi-bed room) and medical treatment in accordance with the standard rate in your canton of residence.
  • However, you are covered from the start of insurance for benefits paid as a result of illness or accident.
Is there a discount? How can I save on premiums?

You can take out this supplementary hospital insurance policy with a higher deductible (annual excess amount that you pay towards the costs incurred). By doing this, you take on more responsibility and can reduce your premiums by up to 35%.

Details about the hospital deductible>

For two or more family members insured under the same contract, we grant a family discount of 5% on this and other supplementary insurance; for three or more insured family members, the discount is 10%.

Details about the family discount >

Subject to certain conditions, children under the age of 18 can receive 50% of this and other supplementary insurances in the first year.
