Would you like to switch your supplementary hospital insurance policy?

All insured persons with a HOSPITAL PLUS, HOSPITAL COMFORT, HOSPITAL PLUS BONUS, HOSPITAL COMFORT BONUS, HOSPITAL PLUS CLASSICA or HOSPITAL COMFORT CLASSICA supplementary hospital insurance policy have the right to switch to the equivalent HOSPITAL Semi-Private or HOSPITAL Private supplementary hospital insurance policy without having to undergo a medical examination.

In the past few years, not enough new insured persons chose the HOSPITAL PLUS BONUS, HOSPITAL COMFORT BONUS, HOSPITAL PLUS CLASSICA and HOSPITAL COMFORT CLASSICA supplementary hospital insurance policies. These supplementary hospital insurance policies are therefore deemed to be “closed portfolios” in accordance with Art. 156 of the Supervision Ordinance (ISO). This will also be the case from 31 December 2018 for the HOSPITAL PLUS and HOSPITAL COMFORT supplementary hospital insurance policies.

What does this mean for you?

You can, of course, keep your current excellent supplementary hospital insurance policy. After all, nothing at all will change with respect to your insurance coverage. We will continue to offer the aforementioned supplementary hospital insurance policies and the many benefits they provide. It can, however, be the case that the premiums for a supplementary hospital insurance policy with a closed portfolio rise more sharply over the longer term than for a supplementary hospital insurance policy whose portfolio is not closed.

Right to switch without a medical examination

For this reason, you have the option to switch to an equivalent supplementary hospital insurance policy with an open portfolio at any time as of the first of the following month, however with effect on 1 January 2019 at the earliest. This change is voluntary and does not require a medical examination. We are offering you the opportunity to switch from your existing supplementary hospital insurance policy to the equivalent HOSPITAL Semi-Private or HOSPITAL Private supplementary hospital insurance policy.

FAQ

What is a closed portfolio?

Supplementary hospital insurance policies with a closed portfolio are products for which we manage the portfolio of insured persons but no longer sell to new customers. By law, the insured persons of a closed portfolio are entitled to switch from the current supplementary hospital insurance policy to another supplementary hospital insurance policy with coverage that is comparable but with an open portfolio. This is governed by the Supervision Ordinance (ISO) [add link to ISO https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classified-compilation/20051132/index.html]. In accordance with the applicable insurance conditions, the benefits of the closed supplementary hospital insurance policy remain unaffected.

What happens if I do not switch?
You can remain in your existing supplementary hospital insurance policy for as long as you want and continue to profit from the benefits it provides. It can, however, be the case that the premiums for a supplementary hospital insurance policy with a closed portfolio rise more sharply over the longer term than for a supplementary hospital insurance policy whose portfolio is not closed.
What are the benefits of switching?

All existing benefits have been transferred to the new supplementary hospital insurance policies and the contributions have been increased generously. We have expanded the international benefits and introduced new benefits such as rooming-in, travel costs for your journey to and from hospital and refunds for stays in a lower-level ward. Depending on the product as well as your age, gender and canton, the premium for the new supplementary hospital insurance policy could also be cheaper for you.

What are the disadvantages of switching?

Depending on the product as well as your age, gender and canton, the premium for the new supplementary hospital insurance policy could at present be more expensive than your current insurance policy.

Over the longer term, however, Helsana wants to ensure more sustainable premiums for the new hospital product through the exclusion of hospitals and doctors with a below-average price-performance ratio. While this may lead to certain restrictions in terms of the choice of hospitals and doctors, Helsana is endeavouring to reach an agreement with as many hospitals and doctors as possible. The current list of hospitals and doctors without cost coverage can be found at helsana.ch/en/negotiating-fair-prices.

Why is my current supplementary hospital insurance policy no longer being sold?

The current development in benefit costs requires adjustments to the supplementary hospital insurance policies. With the introduction of HOSPITAL Semi-Private and HOSPITAL Private, Helsana can ensure a sustainable premium structure. One reason for this is because we now have the opportunity to conclude new contracts with hospitals that are more attractive for insured persons.
