Optional deductibles: Federal Councillor backtracks

Discounts on high optional deductibles will not be reduced for the time being. Helsana notes with satisfaction that the Federal Councillor has refrained from making the intended change, at least for the time being.

In the summer of 2015, Federal Councillor, Alain Berset, announced amendments to the ordinance which would have resulted in cuts to discounts on high optional deductibles. These plans were severely criticised during the consultation process by, among others, the insurers. Federal Councillor, Mr Berset, intended to eliminate the deductible levels of 1,000 francs and 2,000 francs as well as greatly reducing the discounts on the highest deductible levels . In doing so, the Federal Councillor officially wanted to "simplify the system" and "strengthen solidarity".

Helsana and Curafutura were vehemently opposed to the planned, unnecessary intervention in the insurers’ premium-setting authority. Solidarity between healthy and sick policyholders is already guaranteed today thanks to the risk compensation policy. Helsana therefore notes with satisfaction that the Federal Councillor has refrained from making the intended change, at least for the time being. As a result, our customers will be spared unjustified and inexplicable premium rises.
