In consultation with the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), Helsana will offer persons insured with the insolvent health insurer KLuG basic insurance in the autumn. In the area of supplementary health insurance, many customers insured with KLuG already have products for which Helsana is the risk carrier. For these customers, nothing will change in terms of their insurance cover. Helsana will also provide operational support and ensure that the processing of retroactive basic insurance benefits accrued by KLuG customers until the end of 2025 is guaranteed.
12.08.2025
The FOPH has announced that the health insurer KLuG is insolvent and its license will be revoked as of 31 December 2025. Until then, KLuG will remain operational. After confirming the basic insurance premiums for 2026, Helsana will offer KLuG customers basic insurance in the autumn. Customers who wish to accept this offer, or who do not join another health insurer, will be included in Helsana’s basic insurance plan as of 1 January 2026. This will guarantee a follow-on solution and seamless insurance cover for its around 9300 customers.
Roman Sonderegger, CEO Helsana, says: “We’ll help customers of the insolvent KLuG by offering a follow-on solution for their basic insurance and from 2026, operationally ensure that their benefit claims which were accrued before 2026 but have not yet been invoiced are settled. This will guarantee seamless insurance cover. Nothing will change for people insured with Helsana.”
As part of its partnership with KLuG, Helsana is already the risk carrier for many KluG customers with supplementary insurance under the Federal Insurance Contract Act (VVG). For the affected KLuG supplementary insurance customers, nothing will change in terms of their insurance cover. Helsana will contact these customers as soon as possible.
In consultation with the FOPH, Helsana will provide KLuG with operational support this year as required. In addition, Helsana is also ensuring that the processing of basic insurance benefits accrued before 2026 will also be guaranteed retroactively. This is positive news for KLuG customers and their service providers. It will not result in any additional financial burden for Helsana, as all insurance benefits accrued until the end of 2025 will continue to be covered by KLuG or the insolvency fund. Helsana is in close contact with the FOPH and KLuG.
