In 2019, medication costs in Switzerland totalled approximately CHF 7.6 billion. The front runners remained cancer and immune system drugs, followed by nervous system medications and metabolic preparations. The use of biosimilars (generic preparations) offers significant savings potential that unfortunately remains almost completely unexploited. In an additional analysis, Helsana shed light on various problem areas relating to the medication of Spitex patients. These patients take a large number of different medications, which represents a significant risk factor in itself.
This year’s Swiss healthcare award Prix Sana has been won by two humble caretakers from French-speaking Switzerland and a married couple in the canton of Zurich. What should you do if someone suffers a medical emergency? They simply don't know what to do or fear their knowledge is outdated.
The new “Region Report” produced by Helsana shows the flow of patients in Switzerland. Pa-tients are not bound by cantonal borders. Instead, they primarily seek out medical care region-ally. For this reason, care regions are a more realistic way to meet patient needs and better explain people’s behaviour than cantonal structures. On the whole, cantonal planning ap-proaches are being called into question because of the complexity involved in providing care. The report identifies the potential for intercantonal coordination of outpatient and inpatient care.
