Sustainability at Helsana

The sustainability of the healthcare system is increasingly moving into the spotlight of social debate. As Switzerland’s largest health insurer, we make a lasting contribution to the healthcare system of today and tomorrow.

What sustainability means to Helsana

Social, economic and environmental changes go hand in hand with challenges, and we address these at an early stage as part of our commitment to sustainability. After all, unchecked climate and environmental change would have serious consequences for people’s health and well-being.

A high-quality, affordable healthcare system that is easily accessible to all is essential. That’s why we go further than simply covering illness- and accident-related costs: we encourage people to stay healthy by supporting health-conscious behaviour. As part of the Swiss healthcare system, we also have a duty to ensure the responsible use of resources and the reduction of emissions.

We remain committed to strengthening our sustainable corporate management practices as well. The fact that we have once again been recognised by EcoVadis shows that we are making steady progress in this area. In 2025, for example, we expanded our procurement requirements to ensure a transparent, sustainable supply chain. As part of this initiative, we developed a Supplier Code of Conduct and rolled this out for new suppliers.

EcoVadis

Helsana rated bronze by EcoVadis

EcoVadis awarded Helsana a bronze rating in October 2025. Helsana was deemed to have made improvements in all areas and was upgraded from “good” to “advanced” across the board for the first time. Established in 2007, EcoVadis is one of the world’s biggest providers of sustainability ratings for the corporate sector. The rating covers companies from over 180 countries and evaluates them based on an extensive set of non-financial criteria, spanning the environment, ethics, employment and human rights and sustainable procurement.

Focus on sustainability topics

In the 2025 reporting year, we aligned our reporting with the international GRI Standards for the first time. We also adopted a climate concept with a binding reduction path. This concept provides a systematic framework for moving towards net zero by 2050. The key sustainability topics derived from our business model are grouped into the following categories in our Sustainability Report:

Climate change has a direct impact on the environment and health. This is why, at Helsana, protecting the climate is not only an environmental responsibility, but also a health policy responsibility. Helsana is committed to the Paris climate targets as part of its efforts to protect the environment.
