Volume Report: medical benefits increasing

In Switzerland, growing numbers of patients are making use of medical treatments. They increasingly go to specialists and have outpatient treatments in hospitals more often. The Volume Report shows which medical treatments are in high demand and identifies areas with potential for action.

In the Volume Report, Helsana examines the development of medical treatments. Here are the key findings:

  • Patients are going to specialists and hospital outpatient departments more often.
  • The number of emergency treatments in hospitals is rising.
  • The duration and frequency of consultations have increased considerably in all age groups and cantons in the last five years.
  • Imaging procedures such as X-rays, ultrasounds and laboratory analyses are being used much more frequently.
  • In view of the increase in medical treatments from various service providers like hospitals, general practitioners and specialists, coordination is now more important than ever. Yet general practitioners have less and less time to devote to this coordination. Helsana sees great potential for action in this area.

This Volume Report is an expression of Helsana’s commitment. Helsana would like to help increase transparency in the healthcare sector and to initiate a fact-based discussion.

The report is available in the national languages of German, French and Italian
