Profitability has long been calculated in medicine, too. Only for a long time it was not generally agreed what the relationship between economy and medicine was. In the context of annually increasing health expenditures it is not only the health economists who urge: make sure to do only what is worthwhile for the patient. From this perspective, the guest editor Thomas D. Szucs shows with the help of ten authors from different corners of the Swiss health system that medicine & economy is an admittedly not simple, but thoroughly feasible and most of all urgently needed path.
