In June, the likeable young ski team from Upper Valais was awarded the Helsana prize in recognition of their voluntary activities. At the end of August, the team plan to visit a care home and spend an enjoyable afternoon playing board games with the residents. Everyone is a winner: it will be fun for the ski team and for the elderly residents.
The Upper Valais team used ibelieveinyou.ch to raise the money to fund a summer training camp to get fit for the 2016 ski season. The project became reality in August 2016. For one week, the whole team trained hard, living out the "no pain, no gain" mantra.
The training camp schedule included sessions on the artificial ski slope and gymnastics exercises to improve stamina and strength. It is best to build basic fitness in the summer before putting your skis on, according to Melanie Zahno. Role models are a real inspiration for the young sportswoman. "I am really impressed by Mikaela Shiffrin: she is so young but already so successful. Anna Fenninger was my first real role model. I think she is a really nice person and she is very successful."
Many athletes are passionate about attending training camps. "As a team, it makes it much easier to compare our performance and to push one another. Plus it is much more fun training at a summer camp with the others, rather than on your own at home. You have such a good time together," comments Gabriele Barbero from Saas-Fee.
Helsana wishes the young athletes the very best of luck on the road to becoming professional skiers.
