Early detection can help prevent many severe diseases from occurring or worsening. The identification of risk factors allows for the targeted implementation of treatments and therapies that increase the chances of success. A medical check-up often causes anxiety. A discussion with your general practitioner can help you make the right decisions.
So even if you don't have any symptoms or discomfort, it can be a good idea to have a health check. This is particularly true when there are risk factors.
We would like to recommend a number of different health checks based on the guidelines published by Medix Switzerland. Medix Switzerland is an alliance of progressive doctors' networks and individual doctors that has been working in partnership with the Helsana Group for many years.
If you feel that a particular health check would be appropriate for you, for example because there is a high incidence of a certain disease in your family or because you have reached a certain age, you will find it useful to read our brochure on early detection through health checks (PDF, 1MB) or click the links to relevant web pages. You can also speak to your family doctor about it.
Which health checks do we recommend?
- Checks to identify risk factors or detect diseases affecting the cardiovascular system, such as blood pressure checks, tests to check your levels of cholesterol or blood sugar and screening for aortic abdominal aortic aneurysms
- Checks for the early detection of cancers such as cervical cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer or colon cancer
- Checks for glaucoma (i.e. certain eye examinations)
- For smokers, checks for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
You will find information on these health checks in our brochure on early detection thanks to health checks (PDF, 1MB) .
Who can help with the decision?
The decision to have a health check is always a personal one. If you have specific questions about a health check, it is best to speak to your family doctor.
