Jonas Schmid has had an exciting couple of weeks: our Special Olympics ambassador competed with great success against judokas from all over the world at the World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.
The draw put Jonas Schmid in a group packed with very tough opponents, making his performance all the more impressive. Jonas finished an excellent fifth, a result he can be rightly proud of. For him, though, the most important thing was not winning but simply being able to take part in the World Games. The competition hall and medal ceremonies in particular – Jonas was also allowed on the podium – made a deep impression on him.
It was also the first time Jonas had competed against judokas from different countries. “Competing against my Swiss teammates is a very different experience to taking on judokas from India, Syria, the Ivory Coast or the United Arab Emirates,” said Jonas proudly.
Jonas had never been to the United Arab Emirates before. “I was looking forward to the different culture,” said Jonas, who two years ago was appointed the Helsana ambassador for the Special Olympics, the world’s biggest sporting movement for people with learning difficulties or multiple impairments. Helsana is a premium partner of Special Olympics Switzerland.
