Is everything going right with the pregnancy?

It's completely understandable that future parents should want certainty about how the baby is developing. Prenatal examinations allow genetic changes such as Down's syndrome or malformations of the spine (spina bifida) to be diagnosed. However, no-one can take away from the parents the choice of whether or not the child should be born. They need to remember that there is no 100% certainty that pre-natal tests will not damage the embryo.

Ungewissheit

The question of prenatal testing comes up with every pregnancy, as every expectant mother has thoughts like these. It's reassuring to know that statistically, 93 out of 100 children in Switzerland are born perfectly healthy. Nevertheless, it's legitimate if you want to have some certainty. That's what prenatal diagnostics are for. With prenatal testing, at least some of the possible abnormalities in the embryo can be ascertained in the womb.

Prenatal testing: not without risk

Before opting for prenatal tests, you should ask your gynaecologist for advice. He or she can arrange for the tests if they seem reasonable.

Think carefully about the pros and cons. Involve your partner in your decision and talk to other people you trust if possible. It's important that you do what's right for you in the end. You have to be convinced you're making the right decision.

By the way, some prenatal tests can reveal whether you're expecting a boy or a girl. But you don't have to find out about the sex if you don't want to. Perhaps you'd rather it be a surprise?
