Illness during pregnancy

«I don't feel at all well. I have aches and pains and a high temperature, and I'm also worried about the baby growing inside me. I wasn't really anticipating getting ill when pregnant. And now I've really come down with something.»

Krankheit

Pregnancy in itself can already put an enormous strain on your body. You may experience this over and over again. Sometimes you'll feel overly tired or nauseous. Even if you are sick or your digestion is impaired, you don't necessarily have anything to worry about. These symptoms can be part of being pregnant.

Caution with medication

Things are a little different if you fall seriously ill during pregnancy, for example if you develop a fever or suffer severe pains. In this case it's advisable to consult your doctor. For the sake of your baby, don't take any medication without supervision. Even over-the-counter preparations should be taken only if prescribed by your doctor.

Try to get even more rest than usual to allow yourself to recover quickly. Don't worry too much about your baby as nature has devised various ways of protecting an unborn child so that it's not affected by the mother contracting a minor illness. By the way, a chronic illness does not necessarily present an obstacle for a pregnancy either.

What can Helsana do for you?

If you become seriously ill during your pregnancy, you might need to be admitted to hospital. The costs covered depend on your insurance products. If you have basic insurance, you may receive inpatient treatment in one of the listed hospitals recognised by Helsana. With supplementary insurance you have more choice in terms of doctor and hospital.

Support from Spitex

If you have to stay at home when you're ill and don't have any support from friends or relatives, contact your regional Spitex office. A specialist will help you with, for example, personal hygiene, dressing wounds and administering medication. You'll receive a contribution towards the costs of these services from your basic insurance.

You might need help with housework after a stay in hospital until you've recovered. Depending on your supplementary hospital insurance, a contribution towards the costs of household help of between CHF 30 and CHF 90 per day will be covered.

Please remember that you need a medical prescription to benefit from these services.

If you've concluded the basic insurance BeneFit PLUS Telemedicine, please contact the Medgate Telemedicine Centre on the toll-free number 0800 800 090 before consulting a doctor.

If you've concluded PREMED-24, please call the toll-free number 0800 773 633 before consulting a doctor.

If you've concluded PRIMEO supplementary insurance, Helsana will pay part of the charges for the midwife advice line. You'll also receive the costs of online consultations from the University Hospital Zurich.

With home care, the care specialist determines your expected need for care with the direct time requirement. The specialist completes a relevant statement of requirements. We pay for the duration of care required based on the corresponding amount in francs specified by law.

You receive a contribution to the costs for Spitex at home (home nursing care), if prescribed by a doctor.

This is subject to the condition that the chosen Spitex organisation or healthcare professional is qualified and recognised.
