Travelling abroad

Travel for visitors

«My daughter has been taken ill abroad and has been in hospital for some while. We're not sure how long she'll have to stay there, so we'd like to visit her. We're concerned about the travel and hotel costs.»

Having to go into hospital is never a pleasant experience, but it can be even worse if you are taken ill while abroad. The unfamiliar culture and surroundings may be quite unsettling. Language barriers can also make it more difficult to communicate with the doctors and the nursing staff.

Your hospital visit can bring a ray of hope in this situation: you can stand by the patient and help them get better by providing moral support.

What can Helsana do for you?

If a family member insured with Helsana is hospitalised for more than seven days, our emergency call centre will arrange for a close relative to visit them. Helsana will bear the cost of the outward and return journeys, depending on your supplementary insurance.

In general, Helsana will only pay for travel for visitors if you have been taken ill or had an accident while you are abroad and it has been organised by our emergency call centre.

Helsana also provides moral support. You can call for emergency psychological support after a traumatic event or experience 24 hours a day on +41 43 340 16 11. An emergency psychologist will get back to you within 24 hours and provide you with professional advice in confidence. The service is free of charge for anyone insured with the Helsana Group.
