Travelling abroad

Illness or accident abroad

«I'm abroad and need urgent medical assistance. How do I arrange this? Where can I get the medical treatment I need? Do I have to pay for the costs of treatment myself?»

Unfall/Krankheit

Whether it's stomach ache, a burn injury or a slipped disc: find a doctor or a hospital for first aid as quickly as possible. If you're staying in a hotel, the best thing to do is to ask a member of staff or your tour operator for a list of nearby emergency doctors and hospitals.

Inform your relatives in Switzerland as soon as you can. You also need moral support in this situation, not just medical assistance. Your relatives at home can also take care of urgent matters for you which can be dealt with from Switzerland.

If you have a car accident or are run over by a car, make sure you inform the police and get them to draw up a report. It's advisable not to sign an acknowledgement of culpability. Document the case for your car insurance.

Insurance card

Take your insurance card with you when you travel and always have it on you. The uniformly designed back of the card is valid as a European health insurance card and is recognised by all EU and EFTA states.

Accident insurance through your employer

If you are employed by the same employer for at least eight hours a week, you are insured against both occupational and non-occupational accidents through them. Should you plan to take an extended unpaid break, you can maintain your insurance cover by taking out extended insurance cover through your employer's accident insurance before you start your break. Inform your employer as quickly as possible if you have an accident abroad so that they can immediately report it to the accident insurance. If you work for fewer than eight hours a week, you need insurance against accidents from your health insurance. It takes just a phone call for accidents to be covered by Helsana.

What can Helsana do for you?

Helsana won't desert you if you're suddenly taken ill abroad. Contact the emergency call centre if you need medical assistance when you're abroad. We'll also help you if you require medical treatment abroad: from providing the hospital with a confirmation of cost reimbursement to medically necessary repatriation – we immediately organise the emergency measures you need.

You can reach the emergency call centre 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on +41 43 340 16 11. We'll provide you with quick and easy assistance and support.

You can also find the emergency phone number on the back of your insurance card, which you should always have on you when you're abroad along with your passport or ID card.

What does the insurance pay?

Insurance protection in the event of accidents differs depending on whether you are travelling within or outside the EU and EFTA states.

  • Travel within the EU and EFTA states
Thanks to the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, you benefit from the basic insurance law if you require medical treatment in EU/EFTA states. Show your European Health Insurance Cared (on the back of your Helsana insurance card) in the hospital or the doctor's surgery. As a rule, it replaces the confirmation of cost reimbursement and entitles you to the same medical benefits in accordance with the law of the country you are in that you would receive if you were insured there. The costs are settled directly with Helsana via the international mutual benefits assistance. You pay just the local statutory cost contributions of the country in which you received treatment. You therefore do not need to pay a cost contribution (deductible and copayment) in Switzerland. You'll find details of the provisions in the individual countries in the Information sheets of the Gemeinsame Einrichtung KVG.
  • Travel outside the EU and EFTA states
Things are different if you are travelling in countries outside Europe. The basic insurance covers the costs for outpatient and inpatient treatment up to twice the amount Helsana would pay for the same treatment in Switzerland. The cost of medical treatment in countries such as the USA, Japan, Canada or Australia can be very high. So it's important to find out about the insurance options and take out the right insurance before you travel.

Ideally, you should conclude supplementary insurance with Helsana for further medical benefits such as travel for visitors, rescue, transport and repatriation.

Inpatient treatment

Contact our emergency call centre immediately on +41 43 340 16 11. Depending on your insurance protection and the situation, the emergency call centre will settle the treatment costs directly. Alternatively, you pay the bill yourself and submit the detailed original bill including confirmation of payment to Helsana.

Repatriation

Return transportation to Switzerland is insured if it is required for medical reasons and the patient's state of health allows it. Please contact our emergency call centre immediately. We will arrange the necessary medical assessments and organise the return transportation to Switzerland. The corresponding supplementary insurance will assume the costs for your repatriation.

Emergency treatment abroad (outpatient)

Basic insurance
EU/EFTA Member States: respective social rate / Other countries: double amount of the insured costs in Switzerland

By virtue of the Swiss-EU Bilateral Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, you have the same access to public healthcare (doctors, pharmacies, hospitals or ambulances) in EU/EFTA countries as the residents of the country you are in at that moment. In the event of a medical emergency you will therefore receive costs in accordance with the basic rate of the country in question.

In all other countries outside Switzerland you will receive the costs for outpatient emergency treatment up to double the amount that the same treatment would cost in Switzerland (rate of your canton of residence).
