«I'm travelling abroad soon and am really looking forward to it. All the preparations are well under way. I'm still worried about the question of insurance and what I need to do to make sure I'm on the safe side when I'm abroad.»

How you prepare for travelling abroad depends very much on the destination or destinations on your travel itinerary. Find out what documents you need to enter the countries you are visiting. Depending on your nationality or the country you are entering, you require a valid passport and possibly a visa including confirmation of insurance. Don't forget also to take your blood group card with you, if you have one. Make a note of your passport, credit card and ticket numbers and keep copies of these documents at home.

Your bank or travel agent can advise you on how much cash you should take with you and what the best methods of payment are when you are travelling. Remember that phone calls and surfing the internet from abroad can get very expensive. Ask your mobile phone provider about the cheapest solution and only use your phone if you really need to.

Safety situation

Ask your travel agent about the current safety situation in your country of destination. You can also find information on the website of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA).

Vaccination and medication

Vaccinations may be an issue when preparing to travel to some destinations. Don't forget to pack any medication you may require and a well-equipped travel first-aid kit (PDF, 57KB) as outdated or fake medications are in circulation in some countries. But be careful: special provisions apply in some countries for importing medications containing narcotics such as methadone, antidepressants, etc.

If you are pregnant, suffer from allergies or a chronic illness, we recommend you consult your doctor before you travel. He or she will inform you about any risks and preventive measures.

Insurance card

Take your insurance card with you when you travel and always have it on you. The uniformly designed back of the card is valid as a European health insurance card and is recognised by all EU and EFTA states.

Premium statements

Please pay any unpaid premiums before you travel. You can then be sure that you can rely on your insurance protection if the worst comes to the worst without any administrative bother.

What does the insurance cover?

Insurance protection in the event of accidents differs depending on whether you are travelling within or outside the EU and EFTA states.

  • Travel within the EU and EFTA states
    Thanks to the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, you benefit from the basic insurance law if you require medical treatment in EU/EFTA states. Show your European Health Insurance Cared (on the back of your Helsana insurance card) in the hospital or the doctor's surgery. As a rule, it replaces the confirmation of cost reimbursement and entitles you to the same medical benefits in accordance with the law of the country you are in that you would receive if you were insured there. The costs are settled directly with Helsana via the international mutual benefits assistance. You pay just the local statutory cost contributions of the country in which you received treatment. You therefore do not need to pay a cost contribution (deductible and copayment) in Switzerland. You'll find details of the provisions in the individual countries in the Information sheets of the Gemeinsame Einrichtung KVG.
  • Travel outside the EU and EFTA states
    Things are different if you are travelling in countries outside Europe. The basic insurance covers the cost of outpatient and inpatient treatment up to twice the amount Helsana would pay for the same treatment in Switzerland. The cost of medical treatment in countries such as the USA, Japan, Canada or Australia can be very high. So it's important to find out about the insurance options and take out the right insurance before you travel.

The cost of travel vaccinations against malaria, yellow fever, hepatitis B, dengue fever, etc. are covered by various supplementary insurance policies from Helsana.

Optimal insurance cover
Please contact Helsana in good time for advice regarding the right insurance when you are travelling abroad. If you fall ill or have an accident, your basic insurance may not cover all the costs in some countries. Contact Client Services International on +41 844 46 84 47 for comprehensive advice.

Emergency treatment abroad (outpatient)

By virtue of the Swiss-EU Bilateral Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, you have the same access to public healthcare (doctors, pharmacies, hospitals or ambulances) in EU/EFTA countries as the residents of the country you are in at that moment. In the event of a medical emergency you will therefore receive costs in accordance with the basic rate of the country in question.
