Examination during pregnancy

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)

As early as from the ninth week of pregnancy, non-invasive prenatal tests (laboratory analysis that determines the foetal genome (DNA) in the mother's blood) can confirm with a high level of certainty whether the unborn child has a genetic malformation such as Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) or Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). They provide pregnant women with a valuable tool to help them decide whether or not to undergo additional invasive ante-natal examinations.

From 15 July 2015, this test (Trisomy 21, 18, 13) will be reimbursed under basic insurance, provided the requirements of the Health Care Benefits Ordinance (KLV) are met. You can obtain detailed information from the doctor who is treating you.

Cost reimbursement with PRIMEO supplementary insurance

If the requirements of the KLV for persons with basic insurance (e.g. risk in the first trimester test not greater than 1/1000) are not met, and you have taken out PRIMEO supplementary insurance, Helsana will nevertheless pay for the NIP test, provided it is the Panorama test or Praena test offered by our partner firms Genetica and LifeCodexx.

PRIMEO also covers part of the charges for the midwife advice line, as well as the costs of online consultations provided by the University Hospital Zurich.

Various test options

Our partners Genetica and LifeCodexx AG offer various test options. The options offered by Genetica are Panorama Basic or Panorama Plus. LifeCodexx AG offers three test options: Praena test 1, 2 and 3.

Helsana has agreed more favourable conditions with our partners Genetica und LifeCodexx. Genetica ensures a 12% discount on the official prices of the Panorama tests (Panorama Basic and Panorama Plus). A fixed price of CHF 900 has been agreed with LifeCodexx AG for Praena test options 1 and 2. A more favourable fixed price also applies for Praena test option 3 (price to follow). Under PRIMEO supplementary insurance, 90% of the costs of prenatal tests are assumed by Helsana, up to a maximum of CHF 5,000 per calendar year. The billing of services is concluded directly between Genetica or LifeCodexx AG and Helsana.

Our recommendation

Before opting for a prenatal examination, you should ask your gynaecologist for advice.
