Since the middle of 2011, Helsana has been the only health insurance company in Switzerland operating its own in-house scientific health services research centre.
It analyses the quality of medical and therapeutic services and the resources used to produce them. It investigates relationships within the healthcare sector and tests the efficacy of action undertaken. The analyses and studies enable judgements to be made regarding the efficacy and efficiency of the healthcare system and of the fairness of distribution and access to it. The fundamental goal is to investigate what services patients get, in what form and at what price.
Helsana can use the knowledge gained as a basis for optimising healthcare concepts, developing new concepts and evaluating possible implementation scenarios. This knowledge can assist in the search for solutions to reduce the number of situations in which patients are under-treated, over-treated or wrongly treated, and thereby help meet the challenges of healthcare.
